What is Concurrent Session Limit (IMAP/POP3/SMTP)

The concurrent session limit refers to the maximum number of simultaneous connections (via POP3, IMAP, or SMTP) allowed to your mail server. This applies to all devices and email clients accessing the mailbox at once. For example, if the limit is 10 and 10 devices are connected, the 11th device will be denied access until one session ends. Sessions are “taken” when a device or email client connects to send, receive, or check emails. For instance, opening Outlook on a laptop and checking emails counts as one session, and opening an email app on a phone counts as another, and so on.

The number of concurrent sessions allowed for your domain depends on your subscribed plan. Contact the helpdesk team for further details.

To ensure optimized session usage:

  • Set your email client to check for new messages less frequently (e.g., every 5-10 minutes instead of every minute).
  • Log out from devices that are not in use or restart your email application if you suspect too many connections are active.
  • If you need urgent access but keep getting errors, try logging in via webmail instead of an email client.
  • Ensure a stable internet connection to prevent repeated disconnections and reconnections, which can increase session usage.
